Intended
Audience
This program is intended for clinicians, scientists, nurses, and other health care practitioners seeking to increase their knowledge of the fields of sleep medicine and research.

Program
Overview

Most insomnia research has focused upon primary insomnia or insomnia comorbid with psychiatric illness. Insomnia comorbid with one or more medical conditions has begun to receive attention more recently, and represents a considerable portion of insomnia patients in clinical practice. Based on these findings, the proposed symposium will address conceptual models, epidemiology, pathophysiology, and treatment and safety concerns for insomnia comorbid with medical disorders. This program will explore both the causal and non-causal relationships between sleep and sleep loss and an array of medical conditions, as well as pathophysiological processes, particularly in certain neurological illnesses, that may be common to the development of symptoms seen in both conditions. These common pathophysiological processes may lead the decision making regarding potential treatments.
